प्रेमादर्श और अमृता प्रीतम

हमारी स्मृतियों में शेष बन चुकी अमृता प्रीतम कभी किसी परिचय की मोहताज़् नहीं रही। गुजराँवाला (अब पाकिस्तान में) में जन्मी अमृता अपने जीवन के अनुभवों को शब्दबद्ध करती गई और इन शब्दों की आह में ढेरों सिसकियों को समेटकर अपने पीछे एक विशाल रचना-संसार छोड़ गई। वे स्वयं कहती हैं मेरे लिए जिन्दगी एक बहुत लम्बी यात्रा का नाम है। जड़ से लेकर चेतन तक की यात्रा का नाम, अक्षर से लेकर अर्थ तक की यात्रा का नाम और हकीकत जो है वहाँ से ले कर हकीकत जो होनी चाहिए। उसकी कल्पना और उसमें एतकाद रख पाने की यात्रा का नाम। इसलिए कह सकती हूँ कि मेरी
कहानियों में जो भी किरदार हैं, वह सभी किरदार ज़िंदगी से लिए हुए है।
साहित्य समाज का दर्पण हैं यह कोई भी बात नहीं है किन्तु इस समाज के कोने में पड़ी अनकही, अनसुनी, उपेक्षित टूटी-अधूरी दास्तांओं को कलम की वेदी पर चढ़ाना और इन्हें न्यायपूर्ण ढंग से प्रस्तत करना नयी बात है। अमृता प्रीतम इस समाज का अंग रही है उनकी दृष्टि समाज की उस विशेष परंपरा पर बनी रही जिसकी आड़ में ढेरो स्त्रियों का जीवन नीरस और शून्य हो गया। कच्चे रेशम सी लड़की अमृता की चर्चित कहानी संग्रह है जिसमें कहानियों का ऐसा गुच्छा है जिन्हें पढ़ने की तड़प होती है। तड़प होती है उन मासूम और भोली पात्रों के जीवन को उधेड़ने में। अमृता-प्रीतम ने इन कहानियों में गाँव, शहर, अमीर-गरीब, जात-धर्म सभी की पीड़ा में एक ही रंग देखा। कहा जाये तो पीड़ा का एक ही रंग होता है, आँसुओं की एक ही बोली होती है दर्द की एक ही शक्ल होती है। इस कहानी संग्रह से कुछ चुनी हुई कहानियों को लिया है जिनमें अमृता तड़पती प्रेम-गाथाओं तथा समाज की झूठी और खोखली परंपराओं को पाठकों के सम्मुख रखने में सफल रही है।
एक बालिका के पालन—पोषण को बालक की तुलना में अधिक जिम्मेदारी का कार्य माना जाता है। बिन माँ की बच्ची का पालन-पोषण यदि पिता को अकेले करना पड़ जाये तो यह कार्य और भी कठिन हो जाता है छमक छल्लो (कहानी) का मुख्य पात्र हुकमचन्द अपने पैसे और रसूख के बल पर करतारों को छल्लो के लिए नहीं अपने लिए ब्याह कर लाता है। छल्लों (हुकुमचन्द की बेटी) उसको लाडली तो है पर वह एक बेटा भी करतारों से माँगता रहता है। सौतेली माँ के तानों से बुनी चादर ओढ़कर छल्लों रोज़् टोकरियाँ बेचने जाती है। पिता की लाचारी और माँ के व्यंग्य छल्लों के अन्तर्मन को भेदते चले जाते हैं किसी को टोकरी खरीदनी भी हो, तो वह इसकी सूरत देखकर नहीं खरीदता। हर समय तने घूंसे की तरह मुँह बनाकर रखती हैं। अपनी पीड़ा में रोज नहाती छल्लो कब अखबार बेचने वाले रत्ना के प्रेमपाश में बंध गई उसे पता ही नहीं चला। रत्ना को छल्लों का टोकरी बेचना पसन्द नहीं था, पर उसके हालात भी ऐसे नहीं थे कि वह छल्लों के साथ उसके परिवार को पालने का दायित्व उठा पाता। कैसी अजीबो गरीब विडम्बना थी कि छल्लों को पालने के लिए करतारों लाई गई और आज करतारों और हुकमचन्द को छल्लों पाल रही है। अपने प्रेम को तिलांजलि देकर छल्लो वहसी दरिन्दे की शिकार बन बैठी। भारतीय समाज में स्त्री का प्रेम पानी के बुलबुलों की तरह है जो आवेश में उठेंगे, और हवा के कोकों के साथ फूटते जाएंगे। छल्लो के त्याग ने माता-पिता की देखभाल का दामन थाम लिया वही बुलाकी उर्फ मुरकी ने अपने व्यथित प्रेम का गला केवल इस लिए घोंट दिया क्योंकि उसके समर्पित प्रेम को धोखे का ग्रहण लग गया। एक छबीले से प्रेम की सजा बुलाकी की आत्मा और शरीर दोनों को तोड़ गई। निराश और हताश बुलाकी ने कोई चीत्कार नहीं किया, कोई कोर्ट-केस नहीं किया। इस धोखेबाज पर कोई दफा नहीं लगाई। आज की नारी की भाँति उससे कचहरियों के चक्कर नहीं लगवाये। प्रेम के उस सच्चे अर्थ को समझते हुए मात्र इतना कहा मन के सौदे में जब उसका मन ही मुकर गया तो फिर तन को क्या ढूँढना था।
अमृता प्रीतम ने इस कहानी संग्रह में प्रेम के विभिन्न रूपों को कहानियों के माध्यम से प्रस्तुत किया है। अमृता प्रीतम का प्रेम का स्वरूप मात्र स्त्रियों में ही नहीं झलका अपितु पुरूषों को भी प्रेम में समर्पित और व्यथित दिखाया है। प्रेम के दो पात्र स्त्री और पुरूष इसकी परिभाषा को पूरा करते हैं। इसकी गहराई को नापना हर किसी के बस में नही है। विरह को सहना, प्रेमी की स्वतंत्रता और मान का ध्यान सच्चे प्रेमियों के गुण है। अपने साथी की विदाई प्रेमी को विचलित करती है, दुःख के अन्धकार में धकेल देती है, परन्तु प्रेमी का समर्पण उसे जीवन की सभी व्रिQयाओं में जीवित रखता है सुन्दर की दृष्टि पारों के मुख से कभी नहीं हटी थी, पर जब से पारों चल बसी थी सुन्दर की दृष्टि कभी किसी स्त्री के मुख की ओर नहीं गई थी। इसी प्रकार चित्रकार आरती अपने प्रेम में बंधन नहीं लगाती। जाति-धर्म और देश के भेद को भूलकर जिस व्यक्ति से उसने प्रेम किया उसे अपनी वासना और कामनाओं के जाल में नहीं फँसाया। तीस वर्ष मेरी उम्र के ऐसे वर्ष है, जिन पर मैने विवाह का शब्द लिखा था। एक दिन एक व्यक्ति आया न मेरी जाति का, न मेरे देश का। मेरे चित्रों को देखता हुआ मेेरे घर में कुर्सी पर क्या बैठा कि मेरे दिल में बैठ गया। आरती ने केवल पाँच वर्ष अपने प्रेमी के साथ वैवाहिक जीवन का सुख लिया और फिर प्रेमी उस देश वापिस चला गया जहाँ से वह आया था। सारहीन, अन्तहीन प्रेम की बांहों ने उसे रोकने का प्रयास तक नहीं किया। क्योंकि प्रेम विवशता नहीं है। आजकल का लिव-इन नहीं है कि पाँच वर्षों बाद उस पर तलाक जैसा लाँछन लगाया जाये और बदले में उसकी कीमत वसूल की जाये। उस निस्वार्थ और पवित्र प्रेम की कीमत अमूल्य है, या कहा मूल्यहीन है। वर्तमान आकर्षण और उद्देश्यपूर्ति प्रेम की पवित्रता में लगे पैबंद्ध है, जिन्हें आज के प्रेमी-युगलों में देखा जा सकता है। अमृता प्रीतम प्रेम के उस उदात्त स्वरूप को समाज के भीतर से खोज लाई जिसकी भनक भी समाज के ठेकेदारों तक नहीं पहुँच पाई। युगीन ऑनर कीलिंग प्रेम के उस बीज का दमन है, जो कभी-कभी विपरीत परिस्थितियों में भी अंकुरित हो जाता है। प्रेम की कोई जात, कोई धर्म नहीं होता, वह अबाध बहता है और अपने साथ समाज और धर्म की समस्त संकीर्णताओं को ढाहता चलता है। जिस प्रकार मिट्टी की कोई जात नहीं होती, उसी प्रकार प्रेम किसी जाति के बन्धन में नहीं बंध सकता। वह प्रेम के भीतर की आग है, उसकी प्रतीज्ञा का दर्द है। छबीली नाइन स्त्री के उस प्रेम का उदाहरण है, जिसने प्रेमी की प्रतीक्षा में अपनी जुल्फों को लाल रंग लिया। प्रेम के दर्द को दिल में रख लिया। अपने कच्चे खुरे के पत्थर की तरह उसने भी कोई दर्द अपने दिल में धर रखा था, जहाँ वह वर्षों से जीवन के झूठे दिनों को माँज रही थी, मैली सांसों को पछार रही थी मुहब्बत की फटी हुई एडि़यों को रगड़ रही थी और अपने विवाह के कुद चाकू को रगड़-रगड़कर तेज़् कर रही थी। छबीली नाइन अपने प्रेमी की प्रतीज्ञा से अधिक व्यथित समाज के उन लोगों से है जो प्रेम का सही अर्थ जानने को तैयार ही नहीं है। अहम् और रूतबे की बड़ी सी नाक ने उनकी बुद्धि पर भी ताला लगा दिया इस दुनिया के सुनार सोने में तांबा मिलाते है और दुनिया उनको कुछ नहीं कहती, पर जब इस दुनिया के प्रेमी सोने में सोना मिलाते है, तो दुनिया उनके पीछे पड़ जाती है।
वासना से परे समर्पण (सर्वस्व समर्पण) का प्रेम अमृता-प्रीतम अमाकड़ी के रूप में प्रस्तुत करती है। लरकाई का प्रेम किसी में इतनी सहनशक्ति या धैर्य भर सकता है, यह कहना कठिन है। किशोर जब आमों के बाड़े में पहुँचा, सचमुच ही उस जगह पर एक खाट डाली हुई थी जो जगह पूरे तीस साल से उसके लिए सुरक्षित रही थी… जाने आज मेरी जगह इस खाट पर कौन लेटा हुआ है। जिस जगह तीस साल इन्तजार करती है जहाँ उन दोनों का प्रेम फलित हुआ था। प्रेम में ऐसी प्रतीक्षा कम ही देखने को मिलती है। प्रेम में मर-मिटना कदापि सरल हो सकता है, किन्तु जीते-जागते उसी जगह प्रतीक्षा उसकी उदात्तता नही तो और क्या है संक्षेप में कहा जाये तो अमृता प्रीतम ने भारतीय समाज में फैले प्रेम-प्रकाश को उन परछाईयों को शब्दों में पिरोया है, जिनके लिए प्रेम एक गहन अनुभूति रही। यहाँ रीतिकाल की प्रेमानुभूति नहीं है जिस पर लोग प्रश्नचिन्ह् लगा देते है यह इस आधुनिक युग की प्रेम-गाथा है, जो लैला-मजनू, शीरी-फरहाद और सोनी-महिवाल की तरह इतिहास प्रसिद्ध नहीं है, परन्तु इनसे कम तर भी नहीं है। सामान्य परिवार, सामान्य लोग और साधारण सी परिस्थितियों में उपजा प्रेम आज के युवाओं के लिए भी उदाहरण है। इसमें तू नहीं तो कोई ओर, कोई ओर नहीं तो, कोई ओर का सिद्धान्त नहीं है। मात्र आकर्षण नहीं है। झूठे वायदे और धोखा नहीं है। हृदय की अतल गहराई में बसी चाहत है, बस चाहत है। प्रेम का यह साकार रूप अमृता—प्रीतम की इन कहानियों को ओर अधिक रोचक और अर्थवान बना देता है। कभी न समाप्त होने वाली इस अनुभूति को अमृता-प्रीतम ने यथार्थ से उठाकर साहित्य जगत में स्थापित कर दिया।
